"Take
Their Wheelchairs Away"
(c)Nick Masullo 2005
The president says
we have to stand put
Take their wheelchairs awa-ay.
They won’t get far on foot
He says we have to
cut Medicare
Power chairs are costing a billion a year
We can’t afford to pay all that
but that’s what we spent in five days in Iraq
We’ve had wars
overseas pre-emptive and bold
Now it’s time for war on the disabled and old
Try to speak your mind-You can feel all alone
Cripples can’t unite when they’re all stuck at home
People aren’t asking for a Cadillac
Just a wheelchair to get to the grocery and back
You work your whole
life and you pay your share
to Social Security and Medicare
and when the time comes you really need this stuff
They say you’re just not disabled enough. Forty million
disabled folks in this land
Live lives that didn’t turn out as they’d planned.
Should they just up and die and get out of the way
or do they add to our lives in some kind of way?
FDR said- from his
own chair with wheels
Looking out at the land: “We need a New Deal.
Everybody chips in. It seems only fair.
And someday if you need it, a safety net’s there.”
